Abstract:
Mitochondrion is the powerhouse of the cell and participates in various crucial biological processes. The copy numbers of mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)have significant variations across different organs, tissues and physiological states. It is closely associated with aging, cancers, and various diseases, thus holding significant application value as the biomarkers for disease diagnosis. An overview of the diversity in mitochondrial DNA copy numbers in the human body, especially its changes under different physiological conditions or diseases are conducted to explore the biological significance of mitochondrial DNA copy numbers as well as their potentiality as biomarkers.
